Environmentally Friendly Lawn Care Tips

Be it human beings, flora or fauna, a healthy environment is important for everyone to thrive in. It not only looks beautiful but helps maintain mental and physical health. A lot of people are now opting to have small yards or lawns attached to their homes so that they can enjoy a little bit of greenery all the time. But do you know how hard it is to take care of a lawn?

Various new-age techniques only end up harming the environment around you further, to ensure an immaculate lawn and this is no ideal solution. To avoid the same result, here are some eco-green lawn care tips that will not only be good for your lawn but will also do no harm to the environment.

  • Leave the grass cuttings
Don’t take the trouble of raking a lawn immediately after mowing; leave the cuttings where they are. These decompose quickly into the soil and provide much-needed nutrients. They add nitrogen and also act as a moisture barrier. The cut grass thus eliminates the use of chemical fertilizers, which act as an environmental pollutant.
  • Use electricity and battery-powered lawn equipment
Instead of using gas-powered lawnmowers, use electricity and battery-powered lawn equipment. Many environmental protection agencies are against the use of gas-powered lawnmowers, as they create atmospheric pollutants. Therefore, cut down fossil fuel consumption and switch to environmentally-friendly equipment.
  • Grow grass suitable to the climate
Do some research before planting grass seeds and lay the ones for grass that is suitable to your climate. This will save both, resources and man-hours.
  • Use yard waste and kitchen compost as fertilizers
Instead of using harmful fertilizers, use kitchen waste as one of the main eco-green lawn care tips. For this, keep a compost bin in the kitchen, throw all the food scraps, and add these to an outdoor compost pile when the bin fills up. After a few days, you can get the highest quality fertilizer, without spending extra bucks.
  • Insects and worms can be helpful
This is one of the oldest eco-green lawn care tips. Insects and plants are also living beings and similar to human beings, they too require oxygen for survival. You can aerate your lawn and garden manually every season to make sure the soil gets the air it needs, but there is an easier way. Get a colony of worms, spread them throughout the lawn and the garden, and water thoroughly and let them do their job. Ants are also good at aerating the soil and distributing seeds.
  • Water wisely and judiciously
Sprinklers deliver water evenly, but the water evaporates even before it reaches the ground. To minimize water wastage, program your system to water at midnight when the evaporation is the least. Water the lawn thrice a week, instead of every day. You can also use lawn-moisture meter, which will tell you how much water is being used on the lawn and whether or not it is too much or too little. This way you can make sure your lawn doesn’t end up over-saturated so that you don’t end up wasting water.
  • Roll in the clover
White clover, though considered as a weed, adds lush green coloration to the lawn and it grows well in poor soil as well. Sow some on the existing grass bed and make your lawn lush green.
