Foods to Avoid with Renal Cancer
Most cancer treatments and medications have multiple side effects. The severity of the symptoms also depends on the stage of cancer, the type of medication, and the number of cycles of chemo or radiation treatment that has been given. Though many symptoms will disappear as the person’s overall health improves, some symptoms are treated with medication and careful adherence to diet and lifestyle. Diet plays a key role in improving or worsening the symptoms of cancer. Also, a person who is recovering from renal cancer has to be careful to avoid the worsening of side effects.
Here is a list of foods that you have to avoid if you have any of the following symptoms:
Nausea
Avoid food that has too much flavor like garlic and spices. Avoid spicy curries, fried and oily food until nausea subsides.
Diarrhea
Avoid raw or uncooked food like salads. Stay away from food that can cause bloating and gas, like beans, cabbage, and aerated drinks. Do not drink beverages that are either too hot or cold. Reduce high-fiber food that will increase diarrhea.
Constipation
Avoid gluten-rich food found in wheat, barley, rye, and flour. Limit the intake of milk and dairy once you have symptoms of constipation. Snacks with processed grains are low in fiber and can cause constipation. Cookies and crackers should be avoided. Red meat is not recommended right after chemotherapy. Wait for your health to improve as it can increase constipation.
Mouth ulcers and dry mouth
Another common symptom of renal cancer treatment are mouth ulcers. Do not eat hot food. Avoid food that is high in salt and spices. Avoid acidic food and carbonated beverages. Do not have food that is hard and difficult to chew.
Infection and gastrointestinal problems
As one’s immunity is likely to be low right after radiation or chemotherapy, care should be taken that there is no risk of infection through food. One is likely to feel symptoms of diarrhea and constipation, and food poisoning can cause a setback in speedy recovery. Avoid food that is old or not cooked properly. If you are dependent on a caterer for food, ensure that they maintain high standards of hygiene and quality. Ensure meat and vegetables are fully cooked.
Apart from avoiding food that can increase or worsen side effects, avoid the following food as you are recovering from renal cancer treatment.
- Carbonated drinks
- Avocado
- Canned and processed food
- Whole grain products
- Brown rice
- Bananas
- Dairy
- Processed meat
You don’t have to completely stay away from all these forever. As you recover from the side effects, the symptoms reduce and you regain health. You can slowly include normal diets in smaller quantities. The speed of recovery depends on the stage of cancer, the type of treatment done, age, and overall health of the patient. A healthy diet will also help prevent secondary cancer, and reduce the risk of other kidney-related cancers like bladder cancer, and cancer in the ureter.
