Common Types and Symptoms for UTI
Urinary Tract Infection is an infection in any part of the urinary system that includes kidneys, bladder, ureters, and urethra. This condition is caused by bacteria that enter the urethra and multiply in the bladder. Urinary tract infection (UTI) early warning signs include suffering from pain and a burning sensation while passing urine.
UTI early warning signs in children are as follows:
- Poor appetite, lethargy, diarrhea, vomiting, mild jaundice, and fever
- Foul-smelling urine
- Urgency, incontinence, and pain while urinating
The early warning signs of UTI in adults depend on what part of the urinary tract is infected. Lower tract UTIs affect the urethra and bladder. The symptoms of this include:
- Burning sensation while urinating
- Increased frequency and urgency of urination without passing much urine
- Bloody and/or cloudy urine
- Urine with strong odor
- Pelvic pain in women
- Rectal pain in men
Upper tract UTIs affect the kidneys. These can be potentially life-threatening and their symptoms include the below-mentioned points:
- Sensation of pain and tenderness in the upper back area and the sides
- Chills
- Fever
- Nausea
- Vomiting
Common types of UTI
The infection can occur in different parts of the urinary tract and the names are given on the basis of where it happens. The following are the common types of UTI:
Cystitis (bladder)
A person who has UTI may feel like as he or she needs to urinate frequently or may have pain when passing urine. The UTI early warning signs are having pain in the lower belly and cramping in the abdomen or back.
The symptoms of this infection in the bladder are:
- Pain or burning when urinating
- Urgent need to urinate frequently but usually passing only small amounts of urine
- Pain in the lower belly.
- Cloudy or red urine
Pyelonephritis (kidneys)
Pyelonephritis is a type in which one or both kidneys become infected by bacteria or viruses. The infection normally starts in the lower urinary tract as a UTI. The bacteria go into the body through the urethra and begin to multiply and spread up to the bladder and from there, they move through the ureters to the kidneys. Early warning signs to look out for are fever and pain in the upper back or side.
Symptoms of a UTI in the kidneys are:
- Pain in the flank which is below the rib cage and above the waist on one or both sides of the back
- Fever and chills
- Nausea and vomiting
Urethritis (urethra)
Urethritis is a condition in which the urethra or the tube that carries urine from the bladder to outside the body gets infected. The condition is often due to infection by bacteria. The UTI early warning signs are pain and burning when passing urine and feeling the frequent need to urinate.
The symptoms of urethritis are as follows:
- Urge to urinate more frequently
- Difficulty in passing urine
If someone suspects the presence of UTI early warning signs, it is necessary to consult a doctor and take steps to clear up the infection. There are various steps that can be taken to reduce the risk of getting a UTI such as drinking plenty of water and other liquids to help flush out bacteria and urinating frequently, among others.
